A rectangle is twice as long as it is wide.If the area of the rectangle is 98 cm²,Find its length.

A: 32.67

B: 7

C: 49

D: 14

Correct Answer : D

Given that the length is twice the width, this means that if the width is a value ,lets say w,then the lenght will be 2w
length = 2w
width = w

using the formulae for calculating the area of a rectangle ; A = Length * width
A = 2w * w

since we are givent the area as 98 cm² ,we substitute in the equeation above
98 = 2w*w
98 = 2w²

to get w² ,we divide bothe sides by 2 and the new equation becomes;
w² = (98/2)
w² = 49

to get w ,we have to get the squareroot of w² and 49
✓w² = ✓49
w = 7

remember that the length of the rectangle was twice the width. thus we substitute w with our initial expression for length and width
length = 2w
width = w
Length = 2(7) = 14
width = 7

length of the rectangle = 14 cm
